Bitcoin Wallets Analysis

Bitcoin’s on-chain activity shows a noticeable slowdown this week. Active addresses plunged, dropping from 996,079 on August 1st to 661,570 by August 3rd—a significant 33.6% decrease over two days. This sharp decline in daily engagement stands out, especially as total addresses continue their slow climb, now past 1.532 billion. Zero-balance addresses also edged up, suggesting new wallets are being created but aren’t yet seeing significant transaction volume.

Looking at wallet balances, we’re seeing some mixed signals. Addresses holding over 1 BTC dipped slightly, falling from 826,613 to 822,927 in the same period. The 10+ BTC cohort also saw a minor reduction, moving from 130,145 to 129,996. This suggests a slight reduction in mid-tier accumulation.

However, the very largest holders present a different picture. Wallets with over 100 BTC actually increased, ticking up from 17,875 to 17,895. This small but consistent growth in the largest wallets, alongside the stability of the 10,000+ BTC and 100,000+ BTC cohorts, indicates that while overall activity is down, the biggest players aren’t actively distributing. It’s more of a quiet period for the network, with less retail engagement and steady, if not slightly increasing, conviction from whales.

Conclusions About the Bitcoin Network

The on-chain data for the past few days shows reduced network engagement, with active addresses seeing a substantial drop. While total address count continues its slow ascent, the decline in activity among smaller and mid-sized holders (1-10 BTC) suggests a cooling in retail interest or transaction volume. The slight increase in addresses holding over 100 BTC, coupled with the stability of the largest cohorts, indicates that significant holders aren’t exiting. It’s a period of lower overall network utilization, but without clear signs of major distribution from the largest wallets. We’re seeing a market pausing, with less speculative activity but sustained conviction among the biggest players.
